How To Pick A Name For Your eCommerce Store
I think this is the one thing that people get stuck on the most, even I did!
Seriously, my bf and I wrote so many names down on the whiteboard, checked to see if they were available and kept going back to the drawing board Lol!
We want to make sure it’s something we like because after all, this is what people will know you for. This is what you’ll tell people when they ask you what you do…”oh I own “xyz”.
So how do you go about picking a name for your eCommerce store? Let’s review a few key points.
How To Pick A Name For Your eCommerce Store
Here are some tips that will help you when you’re trying to figure out a name for your store:
1. Keep It Short
When it comes to website names, you want to keep it short. When people don’t know you, they are less likely to type in “Samanthassupergreatdepotstore”.
Fewer keystrokes for your new potential customers is always ideal and, it keeps it easy to remember.
2. Be Descriptive
Using the example above, we really don’t know what Samantha is selling. We do know that she thinks it’s great and that it is a depot store buuuut?
You want to do your best to come up with a name that when written/said, people know what you sell.
Are you planning to sell baby items? Perhaps use the word “baby” is in the name of your site. Are you selling candles? The word “scents” or even “candles” would be descriptive enough.
The less confusion your potential customer has, the better.
3. It Has A Good Score
Using godaddy.com, you can search for website names to see if they are available. When you do, you’ll see “Why it’s great”.
GoDaddy will tell you why the name you are selecting is great. Sometimes it will even give you an estimated value for the keywords you have selected.
It’s not the end all be all but it is really nice to see what your potential new website name will be worth.
4. Grab The Whiteboard Or Notebook
As you’re going along you’ll get into a creative flow and before you know, you’ll have so many different ideas floating around in your brain.
Get out a notebook or whiteboard and start writing them down. Don’t discriminate against any of the ideas just yet. Only allow the pen to flow with the possibilities.
5. Use A Name Generator
When you Google “Website Name Generator”, you will see a few tools pop up. One example is https://instantdomainsearch.com/domain/generator/.
Type in a couple of keywords for your new store y voila! You will have a TON of ideas! Try it out using “rugs” and you’ll see all the examples below.
From there, go to godaddy.com and see if the name is available.
6. Go With Your Gut
At the end of the day, you are the one that is going to see this name you’ve picked over and over. As you log into your store, communicate with customers, tell people what you do etc.
It has to FEEL good! You need to be excited about the choice you’re making and, generally your gut will tell you whether it’s something you like or not.
In Conclusion
As I mentioned, it truly is your choice in the end and you have to enjoy it. Definitely keep in the mind the ideas I’ve suggested above so you can attract more customers with ease.
The easier it is to remember, the better!
